Veterans who have served this country deserve access to quality care in their later years. For many veterans — and eligible surviving spouses — VA benefits can significantly offset the cost of in-home care. Yet these benefits are among the most underutilized entitlements available to American veterans.

The VA Aid and Attendance Benefit

Aid and Attendance (A&A) is a monthly pension supplement for eligible veterans who require assistance with activities of daily living. It is separate from VA healthcare and available to veterans who were not injured in service — it is a needs-based benefit, not a service-connected benefit.

Who May Qualify

  • At least 90 days of active duty with at least one day during a qualifying wartime period
  • Discharge under conditions other than dishonorable
  • A current need for personal care assistance
  • Financial eligibility meeting VA pension criteria

Surviving spouses of qualifying veterans may also be eligible.

How to Apply

Contact the VA at 1-800-827-1000, visit VA.gov, or connect with a Veterans Service Organization (VSO) such as the American Legion, VFW, or DAV for free claims assistance.
