Many veterans and their surviving spouses in South Carolina qualify for VA Aid and Attendance — one of the most valuable and most underused VA benefits available. If a veteran in your family needs help with daily activities, this benefit may help significantly offset the cost of in-home care.
What Is VA Aid and Attendance?
Aid and Attendance (A&A) is an enhanced VA pension benefit — a monthly payment for eligible veterans and surviving spouses who need help with activities of daily living. It is not a service-connected benefit. It is a needs-based benefit, meaning eligibility is based on current care need and financial criteria — not the cause of those needs.
Who Qualifies?
- At least 90 days of active duty with at least one day during a qualifying wartime period
- Discharge under conditions other than dishonorable
- A current need for assistance with activities of daily living
- Financial eligibility meeting VA pension income and asset requirements
Surviving spouses of qualifying veterans may also be eligible at a lower monthly rate.
How to Apply
The most effective way to apply is through a Veterans Service Organization (VSO) — the American Legion, VFW, or DAV provide free, accredited claims assistance. You can also apply directly through VA.gov or call 1-800-827-1000. Benefits are typically retroactive to the application date, so applying early is important.
